Donald Small is a North Carolina native with a career in computer programming, electronics and technology leadership. After 20 years based in San Francisco, CA working as VP of Technology for a global tech company by day and artist by night, he moved back to NC in 2017 and now pursues art and woodworking full time. His artwork combines wood, electronic parts, photographs, optics, vintage components, paints and other materials into artwork and art-integrated furniture (“functional art”). He lives and works in Winston Salem where he converted a former NASCAR garage into an art studio/woodworking shop.
I’ve enjoyed art since I was just a kid when my mom took her 3 young boys (sometimes unwillingly) to art museums and galleries to expose us to any art she could find. My earliest personal art expression was with photography and small wood carvings. Over time I visited art museums on my own while traveling and discovered my favorite art forms and artists who provided the inspiration that led me to begin building my own mixed media, three dimension art pieces. I experiment with mixed materials that work well together, most often using wood as a base combined with current or vintage electronic parts, integrated lighting, optics, photographs, reclaimed materials, and mechanical parts. I build wall-hanging and free-standing art pieces, box art, artistic lights, artistic side tables and coffee tables, built-in installations and other items. I also build larger commissioned pieces for indoor and outdoor spaces. Please visit my website at https://insidetheboxart.com.
