Anne McKinney was born in Arlington, Virginia. She received her B.A. in Studio Art and English Literature from Kenyon College in 1977. Working in the magazine publishing industry after graduation, she returned to the studio full-time in the 1990s to begin painting and exhibiting watercolors of floral and still-life subjects.
From 1990 to 1995, she studied classical figure drawing with Jack Henderson (a student of Robert Beverly Hale) at the Art Students League in New York City.
Anne followed her husband to France and Luxembourg in 2000, and studied French at the Sorbonne Université. While living in Luxembourg City, she trained and began teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) while continuing to paint and exhibit her watercolors.
In 2007, she moved to North Carolina to homestead, and began teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem. Her visual artworktoday focuses on lyrical abstract expressionism in watercolor and mixed media.
