Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT
Through my work, I aim to demonstrate that techniques once dismissed as feminine pastimes can come together to create powerful and meaningful contemporary art.
I seek to push the boundaries of textile art beyond the realm of craft, revealing its potential to stand as a unique and expressive art form.
My brand, MacraZ Art, merges tradition and individuality, a name inspired by the elegance of ancestral roots and a personal mark of identity.
Each piece I create is original and deeply personal, shaped by the diverse cultures and aesthetics I've encountered while living across different continents. This global perspective is woven into my work, both literally and metaphorically.
I hope my work stirs emotion, provokes thought, opens hearts, and invites viewers to see yarn and thread not just as materials, but as a vibrant medium for artistic expression.

STYLE
Crochet is my primary medium. It allows me to create organic forms that echo the rhythms of nature and the intricacies of memory. My work is deeply influenced by the magic, natural beauty, traditions and surrealism found in many cultures I've called home. Each piece reflects an ongoing dialogue between craft, memory and identity.

RESUME
Monica Filotas is an international artist whose passion for knitting began at the young age of nine, exploring a wide range of techniques that would lay the foundation for a lifelong journey in textile art. With a degree in Industrial Design, her professional path took shape at the Museum of Modern Art, where she refined her creative vision before founding her own design studio, specialized in the design and development of trade show stands. She earned two consecutive "Best in Show" awards, a testament to her innovative approach.
Her artistic curiosity and global perspective has led her across continents, where she has honed her skills and deepened her knowledge of yarns, looms, dye, felt, embroidery and traditional fibers from cultures around the world.
Her work has been featured in private exhibitions in Bogota, Colombia; London, United Kingdom and across the United States, where she continues to share her unique vision as a master of textile arts.
