Biography
My work combines ceramics and experimental practices to explore themes of functional playfulness, design, and technical skill. Playfulness is a theme lacking in the current world of perfectionism, and it helps bring joy into people's lives. I focus on incorporating playfulness into everyday ceramic items people use or view, bringing them a sense of comfort and something unique, theirs and theirs alone.
By combining hand-building, sculpting, slip-casting, and wheel-throwing, I'm able to create unique shapes and forms. Focusing on how I can use the designs thrown on the wheel to emphasize the added structural elements that are made from sculpting, slip casting, and hand building. My experimental practices and spontaneity in my pieces are inspired by Keith Haring and his approach to art. Keith Haring influenced me through his playful approach to drawing and his connection with the community. Haring focuses on inspiring people's imagination through the shapes he incorporates into his pieces, while making them affordable to everyone rather than a select few. I believe that art brings joy and creativity, and should be available for everyone to enjoy and incorporate into their lives. To further this idea, I enjoy experimenting with wordplay in my pieces, for example, adding sculptural feet to a mug, playing with the word ‘foot’ that is used to describe the ring on the base of a cup, which prevents a mug from tipping over.
