AFAS Mission Statement:

Build, educate and celebrate community through ART.

AFAS provides mentoring programs and scholarships to emerging artists, and, public platforms designed to build, educate and celebrate community through art-based events, community projects, art demonstrations, outreach programs, educational workshops and emerging artist exhibitions.

The AFAS Story

In March of 2007 a group of professionals got together to discuss ways in which we could apply our diverse skills to enhance the Arts scene in Greater Winston Salem. Realizing that our individual backgrounds could in fact be used to achieve this lofty goal in an unique manner, we established The AFAS Group (or Art for Arts Sake) with our mission to “Build, Educate and Celebrate Community through Art”.

After being granted our non profit 501(C)3  status from the IRS we set about to achieve our mission in a most impactful manner. In the next two years the Group hit the streets running. During this time we have expanded and grown well beyond our initial hopes.

  To date we have:

-Developed an emerging artist mentoring program designed to council artists on the “business of art”.

-Awarded 7 scholarships to excelling school students in the Sawtooth School for Visual Art Summer Honors Program.

-Produced 7 solo art shows for emerging artists at our headquarters (Studio 2) in the Arts District.

-Sponsored and produced 3 multi week art and fine craft street festivals (Arts on Sunday Series). This Series was punctuated by strong advertising and producing a performing arts component each day the Series was held to add to the overall experience for those who attended. All this free of charge to participating Artists and the Community. There are currently over 70 artist signed up to participate. As a side note we are proud that over 20 of these artists have found Galleries to place their work due in great part to their exposure at Arts on Sunday. As an added feature to the overall experience to this family oriented event we also have “The Kids Corner” where children can make their own piece of art and get involved in the Arts at a young age.

  The Future:

Simply put, we plan to expand these successful programs including our "flagship" event - Arts on Sunday Series, every Sunday in May and October.

Hope to see you there !
